Around this time last year, Big Fisch and I walked into an old building in our city where a group of about 50 people were gathering for church on a Sunday morning.
It was a hot day and the sanctuary was lined with fans. There was no AC.
The group in the room sat scattered throughout the wooden pews and just about every person was using their bulletin as a personal fan.
Big Fisch and I slipped into a pew in the back; we were late.
Our GPS hadn’t been able to find the location of this old Catholic building where the group was meeting and we were unfamiliar with the city streets. We drove around the block several times and almost gave up in frustration and went back home.
I’m so glad we didn’t.
We were hungry for community in this place where we had already lived for 1 year. We were tired of trying different churches. We longed for a community where friendships with caring, sincere, and fun people would be born.
And during that hot summer Sunday morning, God tugged on my heart and spoke through the welcoming faces of those who greeted us, This is it. This is my answer to your prayer.
Fast forward a year, and here I am now, reminded again of how much God cares for our needs and desires.
How many times have I come before the Lord and prayed “God…I need friends.”?
When I left home for college, when my best friend suddenly died, when I spent a summer half way across the country, God provided friends. People who knew how to love, encourage, and support.
God never turns a deaf ear to the cries of our hearts. Sometimes it just takes a little longer and looks a little different (or a lot different) than we expect it to. But when God pours out a blessing, there is truly nothing greater.
So thanks, Jesus. And thanks City Church friends. Happy one year!
