Just in, exciting news: my sister is having a baby GIRL! She found out today that her baby is looking healthy, happy, and pink! Well, I guess all babies look pink. Or reddish. And slimy. But underneath it all is a gorgeous little miss continuing to grow and develop. We are all so thankful for this miracle from God!
That has nothing to do with the title of this post. I just wanted to share with you. Thanks for listening.
So I was at the gym tonight, workin’ on my fitness, and after lifting weights, I hopped on a cardio machine just like usual. I plugged in my ipod and set it to “shuffle” so I wouldn’t have to keep thinking of what song I was in the mood for next while in my zone. This is also a workout routine of mine. If I am going to be breaking a sweat and forcing my heart rate to increase beyond “lounge level”, I’ve just got to have music playing…and I don’t want to have to think or search for it. Know what I mean?
The first song that played: Beat It by Michael Jackson. Yes – perfect song to get me going. Second song came along and it was some slow Michael Buble song – fail. Skip. That would never do. Third song: John Mayer – fail again. This was getting obnoxious. Then the fourth song begun: Wanna Be by the Spice Girls. Awesome! I began pushing harder on the elliptical as the all too familiar song rang through my ears. I think I even began swaying from side to side before I realized where I was and what I was listening to: I was at the public gym, with two strangers on the all-too-close-to-me machines on both sides. And I was blaring “IF YOU WANNA BE MY LOVER, GOTTA GET WITH MY FRIENDS.” The screen was lit and a picture of the Spice Girls flashed on the screen. Oops. How embarrassing. I quickly flipped my ipod over so that the backside faced up – now no one could glance over my way and see what I was listening to. I appeared cool once again.
Don’t you hate when that happens? Your favorite love song from O’ Town starts to play loudly and you realize you aren’t alone.
What is that you say?
That doesn’t happen to you?
You don’t still listen to songs that were cool when you were 9?
Oh. Right. Neither do I.
My drive home, after I work out, is another time that I just love to jam out to music. I feel energized, pumped up, and in the mood to blast music way too loud. Tonight, I was partaking in this routine as well, and Who Says by Selena Gomeza came on the radio. Now I’ve got to be honest – I love this song. She may be young; she may be from the Disney channel, but I love that song. Probably for a few reasons:
- she’s adorable and has great dance moves
- She’s dating Justin Bieber (or was?) and if I was a pre-teen I would totally have Bieber fever.
- The girl can sing
- I find the message to that song to be very refreshing
I decided in that moment that I would not be ashamed of the fact that I was blaring this young star’s song out of my car windows. I no longer cared how cool I looked cruising in my car. I look totally cool on an average day. I sat back, (totally paid attention to the road), and listened to the (overall) uplifting lyrics to the catchy song.
I began thinking how one reason Selena’s song has become so popular is because most all girls relate to feeling like they are not pretty enough, not perfect enough, and not good enough as they are. So many girls…teens…women of all ages all over the world struggle daily with feeling like they fall short in appearance and what they have to offer. We know this pain all too well, don’t we ladies? So when songs like Who Says are written, we can’t help but feel refreshed, understood, and encouraged, despite how cheesy the song may be. Christina Aguilera’s song “Beautiful” is playing in your head now, isn’t it? Heheh.
I was reminded of how easy it is to start wishing we were someone different; someone who looked better; someone with more talent; someone more desirable. And then I was reminded of the truth: those thoughts are lies; lies that flow into our ears and settle in our hearts. How do I know this?
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God he created them. Male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27
God is truth. God is perfect. God is our designer who therefore makes no mistakes. You, are then enough, just as you are. All contrary thoughts are opposite to the Word of God and are therefore lies.
Simple logic, powerful truth.
Don’t hide who you are, even if it’s cheesy J.
